New Faculty: Sarvesh Kumar Dubey

Sarvesh grew up in Lucknow and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, and his family was essentially into farming. He was interested in writing poetry but was clear in his mind that he would take up science for a career.

After pursuing his B.Sc and M.Sc in Maths from Gorakhpur University, he went on to do his Ph.D. in Maths from IIT Delhi.

“I was planning to do my doctorate in Algebra but was amazed by the idea that maths and computing could simulate real phenomena occurring in the atmosphere. This was when I developed a strong linking for Mathematical Modelling,” he said.

Sarvesh’s Ph.D. was in atmospheric modeling. While working on an Indo-French project, he worked towards developing a dynamical core of a model for weather and climate simulations. He then moved to Florida State University in the US to do a post-doctorate in Tropical Meteorology.

But staying on in the US was never a priority for him, and he returned to India when he got DST INSPIRE faculty position at ISER, Pune.

He joined IIT Delhi in June 2019. His current research is on atmospheric modeling, model development and nonlinear scale energetics in the atmosphere. He is trying to couple dynamical core withparametrization of physical processes (sub-grid scale processes) to make it a complete Icosahedral atmospheric model. He is also trying to estimate variability in monsoon energetics in the global warming scenario.

In his spare time, he likes to do Yoga and watch science fiction movies.
